Why is Skin Care Important?

Over my 17 plus years in Beauty & Aesthetics; I would have to say the most common question I would get would be "Why is Skin Care Important". For this reason I am concentrating this blog edition on this very all important topic.

Skin is your largest organ! It serves as a protective barrier between your insides and the rest of the world, it helps to regulate temperature and acts like a filter.

Skin is in a continual state of growth, old cells die and shed as new cells are forming. Skin is affected by every aspect of your life, from what you eat, where you live, your lifestyle and much much more.

A health skin is better equipped to fight the signs of ageing, it heals much faster and helps to deter potential diseases.

Proper skin care is important to everyone, not just those that are concerned about their physical appearance. An unhealthy skin tends to appear dull and sallow, where as a healthy skin appears full, peachy and vibrant. Wrinkles and fine lines develop easily in unhealthy skin and form deeper if your skin is dehydrated and unhealthy. This can result in uneven patches with mottled colour. When skin is in an unhealthy state it loses elasticity which makes it sag and appear thin.

Good skin care is not just about looking good, it is about staying healthy. Poor skin care habits can lead to skin damage, infections, rashes, acne and wrinkles. An unhealthy skin is more susceptible to disease and is more likely to scar after an injury.

Keeping Skin Healthy

Skin is constantly growing and changing, so you need to be vigilant in its care. Keeping your skin hydrated through drinking plenty of filtered or mineralised water through out the day as well as maintaining a healthy balanced diet to provide the skin with essential nutrients. Seeking the advice of a nutritionist or naturopath is a great way to find out where your vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are lacking and can supply you with professional grade supplements to provide the nutrients if your diet or lifestyle is preventing this. Fresh fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, raw nuts and lean protein is best for great results.

Always remember to use a sunblock everyday regardless of how much sun is visible. This is vital to prevent damaging UVA and UVB rays and remember to cover all exposed skin and use a 30+ or hgher SPF.

Correct Home Care

Correct skin care at home means cleansing it properly. Skin needs moisture to survive, so avoid using water that is too hot when washing your skin especially your face, as heat will suck the moisture from your skin. Tepid or cool water is best. Also avoid using harsh or chemical heavy soaps as they will strip the moisture and the skins natural protective layer called the acid mantle from the skin making it unhealthy and more susceptible to disease, pollution and infection. A cleanser should balance your skin whilst cleansing it, only taking away or giving back what it needs to be clean, healthy and balanced.

Hydrating, moisturising and protecting your skin is the second most important thing you need to do for your skin. All skins need this and the correct moisture protective will give you what your skin needs.

Common mistakes in Skin Care

We all make mistakes with our skin, and sometimes it takes time to rectify them, but it can be done. Some commonly made mistakes are:

  • Knowing your skin - So many of us think we know what our skin needs, but do we really? Skin is a living organ with complex functions and consists of many layers and parts which all perform important jobs. Why we would think we know what our skin needs, if we cannot begin to understand its full potential and functions, unless we have been trained to understand the skin and its anatomy scientifically and professionally it is very easy to do more harm than good.

  • Self diagnosis - Many people buy the incorrect products for their skin. Common errors like using a cleanser not right for yous skins needs, taking away to much moisture and natural oils or over nourishing the skin, each creating issues of their own. Over exfoliating or using the incorrect exfoliant again creating many problems for your skin. Another misconceived notion of not needing a moisturiser because you think your skin is too oily or is healthy - again wrong! This is why at various stages of your life it is recommended to seek professional advice to guide you. Skin changes with the seasons, hormones, age itself, medications and illness, puberty, meneopause, pregancy and much more. Starting on the right path will set you up for good practice and it is never to late to start!
